The Everglades is a region of tropical wetlands and forests in the central and southern portion of Florida. The southern 20% of this region is the federally designated Everglades National Park, the first park in the United States created specifically to protect an ecosystem. Everglades restoration is the largest attempt by humanity to heal a dying ecosystem. It is important that it be done, so that we learn enough to do the same for similar ecosystems across the globe.

The Everglades will help you:

  • understand how human activities and natural forces have shaped the modern-day Everglades.
  • explore the impact of elevation on flooding, freshwater flow, and fires.
  • explore the diverse native flora and fauna as well as the impacts of nonnative species.
  • consider the efforts being made to restore this vital ecosystem, including ways that citizens can help restore and protect the Everglades.
